Getting back to 90s web design – how the things were going at that time…

Let’s do a look back at 90s web design, and a warning to anyone whose website is an accidental anachronism. Remember the days when every PC was beige, every website had a little Netscape icon on the homepage, Geocities and Tripod hosted just about every single personal homepage, and “Google” was just a funny-sounding word?

The mid-late 1990s – the playful childhood of the worldwide web, a time of great expectations for the future and pretty low standards for the present. Those were the days when doing a web search meant poring through several pages of listings rather than glancing at the first three results – but at least relatively few of those websites were unabashedly profit-driven.

Hallmarks of 1990s how to design web site

Of course, when someone says that a website looks like it came from 1996, it’s no compliment. You cannot forget that loud background images, and little “email me” mailboxes with letters going in and out in an endless loop. Amateurish, silly, unprofessional, conceited, and unusable are all adjectives that pretty well describe how most websites were made just ten years ago.

Why were websites so bad back then?

Knowledge. A huge lack of it, before authorities like Jakob Nielsen starting evangelizing their studies of web user behavior. Difficulty. In those days, there weren’t abundant software and templates that could produce a visually pleasing, easy-to-use website in 10 minutes. Instead, you either hand-coded your site in Notepad or used FrontPage. Giddiness. When a new toy came out, whether it was JavaScript, Java, Frames, animated Gifs, or Flash, it was simply crammed into an already overstuffed toy box. No one would think about such stuff as php captcha tutorial, it was Greek to the people. Why should we?

Browsing through the Internet Archive’s WayBack Machine, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of nostalgia for a simpler time when we were all beginners at this. Still, one of the best reasons for looking at 90s website design is to avoid repeating history’s web design mistakes. This would be a useful exercise for the tragic number of today’s personal homepages and even small business websites that are accidentally retro.

Splash Pages

In 1998 websites all over the internet discovered Flash. Suddenly you could no longer visit half the pages on the web without sitting through at least thirty seconds of a logo revolving, glinting, sliding, or bouncing across the screen.

Flash “splash pages,” as these opening animations were called, became the internet’s version of vacation pictures. Everyone loved to display Flash on their site, and everyone hated to have to sit through someone else’s Flash presentation.

Of all the thousands of splash pages made in the 1990s and the few still made today, hardly any ever communicated any useful information or provided any entertainment. That was completely the example of fashion, not clear thinking. Still, today, it is almost charming to think of a business owner actually putting ego well ahead of the profit to have been derived from all the visitors who hit the “back” button rather than sit through an animated

“Welcome to…” Every single website homepage in 1996 had to have the word “welcome” somewhere. After all, isn’t saying “welcome” more vital than saying what the web page is all about in the first place? Background images. Remember all those people who had their kids’ pictures tiled in the background of every page? Remember how much fun it was trying to guess what the words were in the sections where the font color and the color of the image were the same? Dark background, light text. My favorite was orange font on purple background, though the ubiquitous yellow white text on blue, green or red was nice, too. Of course, anyone who will make their text harder to read with a silly gimmick is just paying you the courtesy of letting you know they couldn’t possibly have written anything worth reading. Entire paragraphs of text centered. After all, haven’t millennia of flush-left margins just made our eyes lazy? “This Site Is Best Viewed in Netscape 4.666, 1,000×3300 resolution.” It was always so cute when site owners actually imagined anyone but their mothers would care enough to change their browser set up to look at some random person’s website. All-image no-text publishing. Some of the worst websites would actually do the world the service of putting all their text in image format so that no search engine would ever find them. What sacrifice!

Hyperactive Pages

TV-envy was a common psychological malady in 1990s web design. Since streaming video and even Flash were still in their infancy, web designers settled for simply making the elements on their pages move like Mexican jumping beans.

Animated Gifs

In 1996, just before the dawn of Flash, animated gifs were in full swing, dancing, sliding, and scrolling their way across the retinas of web surfers trying to read the text on the page. Yes – the real dark side of streaming video

Scrolling Text

In the 90s a web designer had a simple but powerful trick for giving you a headache: scrolling text. Through the magic of JavaScript, website owners could achieve the perfect combination of too fast to read comfortably and too slow to read quickly.

For a while, a business owner could even separate the serious from the wannabe prospects based just on how (un)professional their business websites looked. Sadly, the development of template-based website authoring software means that even someone with no taste or sense whatsoever can make websites that look as good as the most biggest-budget design of five years ago.

Beyond any doubt that even today are still some websites whose owners seem to be trying to spark a resurgence in animated gifs, background images, and ugly text. ‘ll just have to trust that everyone is laughing with them, not at them.

The demand for website templates has increased over the last few years, because more and more people want basic or stunning web templates for their website. Most people are always on the look out for good value in these templates.

The amount that free templates have been downloaded from sites can’t even be counted anymore.

These templates still need some alterations like added features, plug-ins, etc. If you do not have any time to do such kind of alterations and you actually need more than a basic look with more personalised and unique features, then pre-designed templates are the way forward.

Why do web designers prefer using web templates? Well, the answer is very easy, because for the small price your website can look way better than anyone else’s. This option will put your website in a much better “class”. The design is also much better with a sleeker and unique look and it is exclusive to your kind of style.

The majority of people, free webpage templates have their own purpose but for those who wants to go for gold, the purpose of a paid webpage is much more effective sometimes, even a step up to make some good progress in someone’s business. The point is that these sites always keep the design labour at a good price and the cut that they get out of such a deal is not so big- that’s the main reason why most people tend to make more purpose of these services.

The following things will help you to consider which template is the best to purpose for your website:

1. Many sites offer flash website templates

This is good if the money is kind of on the low level, but by using this you will still be able to have a professional looking website.

2. Build a professional website easy, affordable and fast

By using a free website template, you can be certain to save time and money. You just need to download one and insert your own text and voila! Within minutes you have a complete and professional website.

3. Consistency

You can keep your whole website consistent with similar colours, templates and design. This will make your website look professional.

4. The website must state the “designed by” link

This can be a drawback, because you do not want people to see that you made purpose of a free template to complete your website. If you do not like this option, then it is best to rather go and look for sites with paid templates.

Just keep all these factors in mind before you buy a website template. Do some proper research and know exactly what you want on your website and how you want your website to look like.

Logo is something that gets into the brain of your potential client and sits there, until the time come to trigger necessary action and – bingo – the client is yours. This is a simplified explanation of how the logo works inside the brain, but you understand that logo should make real effect.

Every logo says something, and anyone who wants a logo to be created needs to decide what message this logo should convey to others.

Size, precision, text, symbol, colors, fonts and other elements – they all count into the success of logo designs. That is why most often it is better to use the professional help in logo design and this does not need to be an expensive company. There are many affordable logo creation offers on the market.

So, how to design a logo?

So, you decided to order a logo, make sure that you have the following issues ready: your business brand is defined, you understand who you are and what the mission of this business it, you understand what you do and what exactly your products or services deliver to people, you understand what makes you different from your competition, what your audience is and all this info will get into a clear picture of how to represent this concept into a logo.

Once this is done, you come to a typical choice that is – to choose a pre-made or 100% custom logo. These options have their own pros and cons.

In terms of money and budget, pre-made logos more affordable than custom logos. But the problem can be is the logo design company is using the pre-made templates illegally – then your logo can be a subject to lawsuits. Surely custom logo is better, but you must be ready that it will take more time and money to have it done.

When it comes down to designs and symbols, then pre-made logos are better, because they are something which is “already tested and proven to hit the target”, but on the other hand – this can be an overused information which will make people bored to look on one and the same template, just done another way.

On the other hand, you can develop your unique style in everything, even in the text font (yes, many big brands have their own fonts which are a copyrighted candy for them) – but, once again, be prepared that it will take time and the budget will get even higher.

And the issue of making changes. This depends upon the changes, but this is the case where the custom logo can be better, if you do that with the same logo company. You see, once they have invented something, they are very quick in understanding how to make changes into that. This does not mean that with pre-made templates they will never sort this out – but your baby is your baby anyway.

Surely these are not all tips, that is why make sure to read more online logo design tips and advice.

Presentation is key in the world of corporate America – or any country for that matter. Whether it is through actions, words, or visual demonstrations, you want to achieve two things in this field.

Your desire should be to have your business offer an attractive image, and you also want the image and its message to harmonize with the vision you want your company to transmit. Errors are all too often made by neglecting this factor. Even the most attractive image and visual representation of your company is not necessarily of value – in fact, can hurt your cause – if it is at odds with the type of persona that best reflects the good things your company has to offer.

If searching for graphic design help in creating your company brochure, make sure your potential trifold brochure template is customized to your company’s specs. Worst case scenario, another company may use the same template and be nearly identical to yours! So be watchful and thrifty with your purchase.

This is possible of the company offering the templates for your brochure offers little customization, and there are hence fewer choices available. Consider the availability of – and diversity of – different choices for customization, to be a facet that largely defines the quality of the service being offered.

When looking at sources from which to purchase templates, another important aspect to examine is how many times you are able to use it.

It’s a blessing that certain services offer templates that are licensed royalty-free. This means that you pay a single flat fee, and are able to use the template in perpetuity, without having to pay extra fees as you go. Certain agreements will also allow you to create new templates based on the ones you have already previously purchased. Additionally, a company may allow you to provide these templates to clients.

Your unique business needs to be understand by your template designer. So good communication is a must. Ask if the company is willing to work with you, in order to customize a template for yourself; or, of course, you could customize it yourself to an extent, as discussed above. Also, even if you do not find what you are looking for the first time, keep checking back. Companies which provide such services are often working on mass producing new products all the time, and so with your next visit there may be something new that is exactly what you were hoping for.

Do your homework and I’m sure you’ll come across reputable providers of quality brochure templates.

So you’re making your own web site. You’ve been working on it for a while, you have some good content, but something is still missing… cool graphics! Let’s face it: a web site without nice graphics is like a TV show without color. It’s boring and drab and won’t look very visually appealing. You want your site to catch people’s attention and make them say, “Hmm, this looks interesting, I think I’ll check it out”. One of the best ways to do this is to have a good header graphic at the top of the page.

What is this great thing you speak of?

It’s an image consisting of three parts: a background, a title, and a sub-heading. For example, let’s say you are building a web site about dogs. Your background might be a scenic view of a city park with a few dogs running around having a good time. Your title might be: “Dog Lovers Paradise”. For a sub-heading, you could either use the URL of your main web site or a line of descriptive text saying what your site is about: “all the info you need to be a good dog owner”, “buy discount dog food here”, “how to take care of your dog”, etc. If you are running on online business, you could put your business slogan here.

How do I get the goods?

There are 3 main ways to get header graphics, depending on how much time and money you have available:

1. The expensive way – hire a professional graphic designer to make them for you

2. The cheap way – buy a customizable set of pre-made graphics from the Internet

3. The free way – make them yourself for instance with Gimp Tutorials!

Option #1 may be great for big corporations that have a lot of money, but it’s not so practical for small businesses or individuals who make web pages as a hobby. Sure, you might be able to hire a freelance graphic designer who will charge $50 per image or something like that, but even that’s a lot of money for most people.

When I design web sites, I prefer option #2. This is a great balance between time and money. It’s easy to find good image packages that cost a lot less than hiring a professional. Such packages typically provide a number of different generic backgrounds and styles so you can pick one that fits the topic of your site. Files are given to you in a format that makes it easy to edit the individual elements of the image, such as the popular Adobe Photoshop .psd format.

In a .psd file, image elements are organized in layers that can be turned on and off, or changed as you see fit. So you could pick something that you like, change the title and sub-heading to be whatever you want, and then save the new image as a .jpg file for your web page and you’re done! It’s that easy! You can have a nice, professional looking header for your web site in as little as 2 or 3 minutes! All you have to do is spend a little bit of time and money finding a good graphics package to use.

If you have a little more time and want to make something truly original, then you can go with option #3: do it yourself. Making your own header graphics can take a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it and if you use the the Gimp its free. If you are good at it, you could even go into business for yourself as a freelance graphic designer or make your own graphics package to sell!

Make your own headers and images with free software using the Gimp Tutorials to show you how.

I am often amazed at some of the things that people manage to draw on a computer. When doing architectural drawings, it is pretty easy to see how it is done, though using that type of drawing software is often something that takes a lot of training. However, when it comes to art drawing, there are some options out there that work very well, and it’s often astounding how well some of these creations come out when using nothing but a computer screen and a mouse.

My dad often uses drawing software to make some really neat things. He is an artist anyway, so I’m not that surprised. It did take him a while to get used to the difference between using a pencil or a paint brush as apposed to using a computer mouse to draw, but he got it after a while. He uses rather simple drawing software, but he only uses it once in a while, so that is enough for him. He often makes cute little pictures to frame and give to us as gifts, or he messes around with a rough draft of something that he wishes to commit to paint and canvas later on.

My daughter uses the drawing software on her computer as well. She has our very old computer in her room for educational games, but she loves to draw with it too. The drawing software she uses is Paint. This is been around for a long time, and hasn’t really changed much. As far as software goes, it is rather simple, but she can use it to create whatever it is that she finds in her imagination. In fact, being simple is an asset in this case, as she could not learn to use anything more complicated at her age. It works for her, and for my dad as well.

There is more complicated drawing software out there. These are used for projects that might have a commercial value. There are also some that generate really great looking logos and other things that one might need for their creations. That, along with the drawing software, can give anyone the tools they need to make a rather professional looking presentation of any sort right from the comfort of their own home. That certainly makes taking work home much easier for graphic designers, and also allows people who volunteer for projects the chance to spend that time at home as well.

Digital Editing Software

No matter what field of media you work in, digital editing software is key. When I first started out as a designer and musician, I thought that the art you created was largely independent of the media. A good artist could create good art, no matter what they were working with. A bad artist, even with the best digital audio editing software, would always produce junk. It has taken me years to realize how naïve I was at that point. The things that I believed simply were not the case. Software digital editing is the future. The way you process the image is more important than the way that you envision it.

I have been working with digital video editing software for years, but it only took me weeks to realize how important it was to the movie industry. Let’s face it: movies have gone downhill but no one has noticed. The digital editing software is so good that they can splice things together, add in special effects, alter the dialogue, alter the characters, and generally rework things at the last minute to make them appear passable. The same movies that we make today would not work without digital editing software. Can you imagine seeing the Lord of the Rings without all of the CG? No one would bother. It would be a flop!

The same is the case with most of the music that we listen to nowadays. I have a friend who is heavily involved in the recording industry, so I know what I’m talking about. He says the digital editing software is more important than the actual artists that are picked by the studios. The artists are mostly picked for their looks and their style, not for their musical ability.

All the songs are written by Independent songwriter who contract with the studious anyway. A few vocal tracks are taken from the “recording artists”, and patched together with digital editing software. I would say a good half of the pop stars nowadays don’t even know how to play music. At least a third of them could not sing the first time that they came into the studio. It doesn’t matter. With the right digital editing software, anything is possible. Digital editing software can make Britney Spears a star, just as analog editing hardware once made the Beatles a supergroup. You can be bitter about it or you can accept it, but the facts don’t change. You need the right gear to do the job.

Landscape Design Software

If you just have a small lawn or garden, you may not have too much trouble designing what you want to do with your landscape. It might be a simple matter of drawing a picture and laying out what you want to do. However, if you have a landscaping business, or have a very large property, you may want to invest in landscape design software. Though this type of software will not take all of the work off of your hands, but it will make it much easier for you to see what you are doing, and can also help you decide what you need to buy, and what your budget will be.

Those with a large property who wish to landscape often have the problem of envisioning the finished product. There is landscape design software out there that can help eliminate this problem for you. It works much like the programs you might use to set up blueprints to build your own home. As you add features, plants, sidewalks, pools, ponds, or anything else you may wish to add, the program can render a picture for you so you can get an idea of what it might look like when you are finished. Landscape design software can also be used if you are doing this for someone else.

When you are looking to buy landscape design software, make sure you get some that will help you estimate your budget. You should be able to choose the exact plants and accessories you wish to buy, and the program should be able to give you an estimate of how much your project will cost when you are finished. This can help you decide if you are on the right track, or if you are spending too much money. The landscape design software should also be able to tally the number of each item that you need to buy so that you may print out a list for easy shopping.

If you have a problem finding landscape design software, you may have to buy it online. Prices will vary, but remember that you will get what you pay for. If you have a very complicated project coming up, or if you’re running a landscaping business, you want to buy the very best you can get. If you are only doing a small project, or perhaps aren’t sure how many times you will need to use your software, you might be able to get away with buying one of the cheaper landscape design software packages on the market.
