As a computer technician most of the calls we get start off with “I have a virus”. The most common answer back is what leads you to believe you have a virus. 90% of the time the customer starts talking about their home page being highjacked and how they have pop-ups all over the place. Then they go into how they have Anti-virus software and want to know how they got infected in the first place.

It’s a little known fact to most people but viruses now a days are not as big of an issue as spyware. The above person may have a virus but the symptoms they gave are not for a virus but spyware. When you are getting pop-ups on your computer you can be certain you have spyware installed on your computer.

Remove spyware the easy way
The reason you were infected in the first place is because you did not have enough protection. Having anti-virus protection is a start but you still need anti-spyware protection. Spyware is a whole different beast and needs to be handled with an anti-spyware Client. While most anti-spyware clients are good at preventing spyware most do a poor job of removal once you are infected.

Spyware can be installed on your computer in many different ways. Most often the user is tricked into installing the software. Zlob for instance can be installed when you try to watch a video online and the video asks for a new codec. When you install the codec you really installed the Zlob spyware Trojan and now your infected with spyware.

The thing that really bothers me about this is while Norton and MacAfee do a good job on the front end of protecting consumers against Viruses they suck at removes spyware. Once you are infected with spyware it can be very hard to remove. Many of my customers go out and buy software only to find it will not remove the spyware they have on their system. An internet security suit has 3 many components, Virus protection, Spyware protection and a firewall. You need all three to be protected. While Norton Internet security suit will protect you in the future chances are it will not remove the spyware you have on your system.
